The Boss Baby: Family Business Chat with Director Tom McGrath!

Thank you DreamWorks, Universal and Tom McGrath for sitting down with us and discussing the smash hit, The Boss Baby: Family Business!
DreamWorks Animation The Boss Baby: Family Business is the sixth film McGrath has made with DreamWorks. You might know him from co-writing and directing “Madagascar” movies, and he’s directed DWA’s “Megamind” in 2010. Mr. McGrath was nominated for an Academy Award in 2017 for “The Boss Baby.” His films have generated nearly $3 billion at the box office worldwide.
DreamWorks The Boss Baby was a box office smash hit in 2017 and longtime studio director Tom McGrath has brought to us the most anticipated sequel, The Boss Baby: Family Business! Mr. McGrath discusses how much he enjoyed working with his stars Alec Baldwin, Amy Sedaris, James Marsden and Jeff Goldblum.
What I love the most, literally right after Boss Baby, Mr. MCGrath started thinking of the sequel and this is how The Boss Baby: Family Business was brought to life.
Mr. McGrath ~ I called my writer, Michael McCullers, and we just started talking. We have an opportunity here.” The first movie ended with Tim as an adult telling his daughter how he met his brother. We had this little baby in a crib with a suit wink at the camera, which wasn’t to set-up a sequel, as much as it was to say, “Oh maybe Baby Corp. is real!” to the kids.
We brought in Amy Sedaris, who helped us create this really wonderful character [Tina], who’s more of the voice of the millennial generation. Positively charged. Embrace teamwork. Have good family/life balance. That was our springboard.

During the junket we also asked Mr. McGrath if there was ever any other casting choice besides Jeff Goldblum for Dr. Armstrong?
Mr. McGrath~ “No. When you think, “Who should play the world's smartest baby?” it's Jeff Goldblum. And fortunately, he wanted to do it. He came to the studio, and I pitched him the story even though it was still early on when we were still working on the script. And he really liked the idea. On the fly, since we didn’t have the full story, I just kind of threw out like, “Hey, at the end, wouldn't it be great if he learned his lesson through the other characters and went back to his parents?” and he just loved that idea.
Jeff is amazing for animation because his delivery is so unique. He’s so charming and quirky at the same time. The animators had fun just because of the pauses he would put in sentences. It was fun for them to have a unique way of approaching the acting for his character.”
Mr. McGrath energy, his love of the movie and how genuine he is, I wanted to share with you all. This is one of the many reasons I love The Boss Baby: Family Business! It’s a fun and joyful movie for the entire family and now I know why, it’s because Mr. McGrath has poured his heart and soul into it!
