RIDLEY JONES Premiers on NETFLIX July 13th!

Thank you Netflix for having me sit down with Emmy Award-winning creator Chris Nee to talk about her upcoming new show, Ridley Jones!

Chris Nee and her production company Laughing Wild are best known for creating all-inclusive children’s programming such as Doc McStuffins and Vampirina in bringing more representation to Netflix. The Peabody, Emmy, and Humanitas Prize winning producer and writer has unveiled her first slate of series heading to the streaming goliath!

Coming off the heels of the wildly successful series “Waffles + Mochi,” Ridley Jones is premiering on Netflix on July 13. The show’s intended for kids to ask questions – like “is Fred a boy or girl? They’re just Fred.” The non-binary bison shares preferred pronouns in episode one. Nee’s goal is to make these characters “non-issues” for kids TV and believes understanding and acceptance starts with the youngest viewers—preschoolers.

Inclusivity is a central theme of Ridley Jones, Netflix’s first series from Nee, a pioneer in diversity and inclusivity in children’s media. Ridley continues Nee’s tradition of creating strong, relatable female characters, following in the footsteps of girl leads in Nee’s Doc McStuffins and Vamperina. Ridley Jones presents compelling and relatable LGBTQIA+ characters as well like Fred, the non-binary bison—the first re-occurring non-binary character in a preschool series. Nee’s work to advance representation of diverse children, characters and storylines was recently recognized as part of her appointment to the Board of Directors for Women in Film, Los Angeles.

Nee on her new show, “I know what it’s like to grow up not seeing myself represented in the shows I loved. I know that it matters not only who is on screen, but who is behind it. The mix of shows announced today perfectly represents what matters to me. I want to reach the next generation of kids, yes, but I also want to embolden and teach the next generation of diverse and underrepresented creators. At Laughing Wild I’m able to build a company that reflects my values, and work at every turn to change the ‘who and how’ of making content for kids.”
