A NOTE FROM FROM WRITER/DIRECTOR/PRODUCER CHRIS WILLIAMS

As a kid I loved movies.

I vividly remember the experience of sitting on the floor of a community center and watching Bambi projected on a portable screen. The movie was charming and beautifully designed, but of course it was much more than that.

And I remember a time when watching movies at home meant renting a VCR and a handful of movies for the weekend. I was hooked, and I would watch the same movies over and over again, wearing out copies of An American Werewolf in London and The Road Warrior.

I began to draw obsessively, driven by a compulsion to express stories visually. And when I got my hands on a camera, I started making stop motion movies. (Highlights included a documentary about dinosaurs, and several bloody encounters between dinosaurs, cowboys, robots and chicken-men. They weren’t great. I was still working out the kinks.)

As I grew up, I found there was one type of story I loved most of all – the rollicking adventure. I loved King Kong, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Treasure Island and Lawrence of Arabia. Big sweeping films, where characters venture off into the unknown, were irresistible to me. And they lent themselves perfectly to the medium.

I wanted to make movies, and one day I wanted to make a movie like that.

It took over three years to make The Sea Beast, and two of them were during the pandemic. The movie is ambitious in scope, and it took everything we had to pull it off. And, of course, we were all dealing with the challenges of lockdown and worries about an uncertain future. But through it all, the crew believed that we had an opportunity to make something special. Something that would evoke the classic adventure stories, while still looking forward. Something hopeful. This film is the sum total of the hard work and indomitable spirit of hundreds of artists who gave everything they had.
