Visited Sony Animation for The Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature Spider-Man: Into the S
Thank you Sony Animations for inviting me to celebrate The Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse comes out on Digital NOW and 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on 3/19!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a phenomenal movie, it’s a story that every child should know and understand, “Anyone can wear the mask,” and most importantly what it means to wear the mask. It’s an endearing story of a typical teenage boy, who could be any of our sons, that’s trying to find a place in the world to leave his mark.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is much more than Miles Morales the Spider-Verse story, it marks a major breakthrough for animation. We had the opportunity to meet Denise Koyama who did much of the storyboarding for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Storyboarding helps to visualize the story for the director, Denise mentioned that when she read the script she visualized exactly what the movie should look like.
We met VFX Supervisor Danny Dimian who spoke about the comic feel of the movie. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is different from your regular animation, it feels like a comic strip has come alive. From the conception of the movie, they knew they wanted it to be animated, art over realism. They implement line work from comic books into the rigging of their characters. The result of the look of the characters and scenery, as Danny Damian put it, is “free from realism in a really graphic way.”
Next up, Josh Beveridge, Animation Supervisor. Did you know why there's a hyphen in Spider-man? It’s because Stan Lee didn't want people to confuse Spider-Man and Superman. They started Spider-Man the first thing they thought of, “Why does the world need another Spider-Man movie?” The conclusion, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse tells a new story, something that hasn’t been seen. What they knew for a fact was that they 100% wanted it to look like a printed comic book, somewhere between reality and animation.
We were privy to “Caught in a Ham”: The Spider-Ham Short, I LOVED IT! Catch this all-new Spider-Ham short among over 90 minutes of special features when you bring home SpiderVerse, on Digital NOW & Blu-ray 3/19!
Our Spideytastic day ended with producer Chris Miller and the directors Bob Perischetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothem. Chris Miller. I thanked them for creating a movie that makes provokes you to dream in big, be bold and be you. That being different is beautiful, being unique is what makes you special.
