Winter is here (yes, I thought of Game of Thrones when I just said that) how will you be protecting your pipes? The weather is cold, pipes could freeze, burst, it’s important that you take steps to protect your pipe, your home.
Keep your garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. (Heads up, if you have small kiddos move all hazardous products)
Let the cold water drip from a faucet. By running water through the pipe it will help prevent pipes from freezing.
If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas. And to prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates, where the house rests on its foundation.
Here’s another great piece of information, soft water is better for your pipes. Water softener can help prevent plumbing damage by removing the excess minerals from the water. Water softener releases chemicals into the water to reduce the calcium and magnesium, making the water taste and smell better, easier on your skin and clothes, as well as protecting your water pipes.
