The most popular movie by a landslide was Finding Dory, which was the favorite of seventeen states. But there were several other interesting finds we got from our data:

  • There was plenty of love for each Pixar movie—not a single one was left off the list of frequently googled Pixar movies.

  • Each Pixar sequel is at least as popular as the first movie of its series, if not more so. For example, Finding Dory is more than eight times as popular as Finding Nemo!

  • Utahns love Pixar movies. Their state had a seven-way tie for first place among A Bug’s Life, Brave, Cars 3, Inside Out, Monsters Inc., The Incredibles, and Up.

  • Coco, inspired by the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is popular in California, which has the largest Hispanic population of any US state.

  • New Mexico’s favorite movie was Cars, which probably has a lot to do with where the movie was set. The fictional Radiator Springs is near Route 66, a famous highway that cuts through New Mexico.

  • Inside Out, a movie that explores mental health, was a favorite of Colorado and Vermont. Both these states are home to some of the most prevalent mental health issues in the nation.

  • Washington and Wyoming both love WALL-E, a movie exploring a future in which humans have polluted the earth so badly that plants can’t grow anymore. That’s not something Washington has to worry about, since it has some of the best soil quality in the US, but Wyoming has the third worst.

  • It’s odd that Illinois loves Ratatouille, since Chicago is the most rat-infested city in the US. But maybe after seeing those big guys wandering the streets, it’s nice to imagine they’re heading to their job at a fancy restaurant.
