Snatched In Theaters May 12 “This Mother’s Day Weekend."
Thank you 20th Century Fox for hosting such a fun press junket and giving us first look at Snatched with Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer. It was wonderful seeing Goldie back on the big screen after 15 years! She hasn’t changed a bit, with that signature radiant smile and that beautiful flowing blonde hair, she’s just as graceful and stunning as ever. Amy is every bit as delightful and hilarious, she had us in stitches. 20th Century fox had graciously given us access Amy Schumer, Goldie Hawn, Joan Cusack, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes, Christopher Meloni, Paul Feig and Jonathan Levine.
Now I can totally relate to this movie, my mom and I went on an epic vacation roughly 8 years ago. Our adventure took us to South Africa, Paris, London and Italy. Even the best of relationships are tested when you get two women together, specifically mother and daughter, boundaries are tested and the love-hate relationship is accentuated.
Snatched has some epic one-liners. Make sure you're not drinking anything during the movie because you’ll choke on it like I did. My top three that had me spitting out my water in no particular order: Goldie is given a drink and she misheard the “Welcome” as “whale cum”, I mean who would have thought of that? And why would someone think they would get served “whale cum,” the look on her face was priceless. Another scene where Goldie and Amy are told that they don’t need to worry about human trafficking because they look like “melted candles.” The scene that had me thinking OMG, was when Amy was at a club in the bathroom and using the bathroom sink to clean off her body and it wasn’t her hands! Who does that and then gets caught. You’ll laugh so hard that your belly will ache and since you're taking your mom, it will be perfect, she can take care if you afterward.
Armed with a million questions that I peppered them with here are just a few I wanted to share with you or this post would never end. Given this movie is about mother, daughter relationship I loved that Amy fought to have Goldie as her mom. However what struck me was, how is it that Amy and Goldie are friends and how did they meet?
Kathy: I know that you guys had fought for Goldie to be in it.
Ms. Amy Schumer: Yes, we fought to be in this together.
Kathy: Yes, I love that. But, I want to know, how did you two meet in real life that you fought for her to be?
Ms. Amy Schumer: I read the script and just pictured it with the two of us the whole time. And then I saw her on a plane, and in the airport, I went up after the flight and I just said, I love you, like everyone else, and I'm a comic actress, and there's this movie, and I really want you to play my mom. And so, I wanted to just kind of plant the seed. I wasn't like can I have your email, but I hoped she remembered. And then we really met in London and got in cahoots together to try to make this movie with the two of us.
Amy and Goldie spoke about motherhood and I should warn you, grab a tissue, by the end what Goldie was saying we were all in tears.
Goldie Hawn: Well, there's certain things that mothers do automatically. You’ve got eyes in the back of your head, and you don't want your kids to fall in potholes. And so, what happens is that, when they're little, I think that's who you should be as a mother, right?...So, I know that as my piece of wisdom, but this character did not know that. This character was completely unconscious about it, and by the way, extremely needy for herself because what happens is when you have any empty nest situation and you lose your daughter--there's a very interesting story that I'll share with you about Daphne and Persephone. And I don't know if you know this, but it's a myth, and it really is about a mother--I think it was Persephone. I'm not sure which one was Daphne and Persephone. She actually was the mother of Daphne. And at 14, she left her mother, and she went down to the underground. And she missed her so much because she suddenly had no strength. What happened was is the daughter was now becoming a young woman. She was having sex. She was down with Hades. And she made a promise, she missed so much, that she would create spring and summer if he'd just give her back for those months of the year.
It's a very powerful image because when your daughter leaves, not always your son, but when your daughter leaves, it feels different, and you feel weak, and you are aging. And it says a lot of things about you losing your youth and your vitality because you have to pass the baton to your daughter. And that's a very sometimes unconscious reason why do I feel depressed, why do I not feel happy, why do I not feel sexual, why am I sad, why do I cry for no reason. These are the kind of things that women need to know...So, mother/daughter relationships have huge implications of whom are you, how have you lost your power, how do you regain your power. You don't regain it by telling your kids what to do, and you don't regain it by putting sun guard on them. You regain it becoming a friend and a person that you can talk to and share with and be intimate with and sometimes tell things you don't want to tell anybody else. So, that's trust. So, I think it's our job to allow our children to breathe, and then they come back You know, when my mother died, I knew I had lost the only person in my life that would love me unconditionally, no matter what. And that was a big loss. So, my mother bereaved when I left her--you later begin to bereave the loss of that love. And it comes back to you in unseen ways. But, it's a big moment of feeling like an orphan. And I think that people have to remember that. There is an end game.
Amy: I brought my mom, and we like held hands at the parts. I knew she would know the parts that were taken exactly from us. And she laughed louder than anybody. Anything I've ever written or said about my mom she's seen it and agreed on it. Then at the end of the movie, we were both bawling. And it was like at the screening where it was editors, and it was inappropriate, I would say. And it caught me by surprise and it was important to me like have this kind of love letter to her like I get it and you did the best I could and I want to be grateful for you. And, you know, it's the most complicated relationship in the world, right, love hate relationship
Now that I’ve got your attention, this is a BYM movie (Bring Your Mother) and a group of your friends with their moms. This is a must see, a great way to kick off Mother’s Day weekend. Have fun and enjoy all the antics these two get into, I will leave you with MAMMA! Hahahaha, you’ll get a kick out of this and absolutely remember me when you hear those words. xo
